Community Solar

Minnesota is a pioneer in the development of Community Solar, which allows five or more electricity consumers to join together and develop a larger solar project at lower cost. With community solar, the solar equipment is not on your roof or property, but may be on a large commercial or institutional building rooftop nearby. Any Xcel Energy customer can become a subscriber to a community solar project and by investing in a subscription to the project, subscribers receive a credit on their monthly utility bill for the next 25 years.

REP is committed to developing community solar projects that keep the concept of “community” at the core of these innovative clean energy projects. That means REP will focus on community solar projects that have the some or all of the following elements:

  • Projects are located in higher-density urban areas, mostly on rooftops, rather than on farmland and open space in areas outside of the city;
  • Community solar subscriptions are available for homeowners, renters, small businesses, and non-profits, including affordable opportunities for low-income households;
  • Projects that are committed to significant minority and women-owned business participation in design, construction and operation of the projects;
  • Partnerships with community-based groups, such as religious congregations, non-profit groups and neighborhood associations, for ongoing operations;
  • Projects that favor Minnesota-made solar equipment, vendors, and financing partners.

Job Training

Renewable Energy Partners is leading the effort to develop a state-of-the-art workforce training facility on the Northside of Minneapolis. The Multipurpose Training Facility (MTF) will provide high-quality, sector-focused training and career development in North Minneapolis that is accessible to the urban core of the entire Twin Cities.

Training for certifications and degree programs to take work-ready candidates from entry-level jobs to higher-skill careers with energy utilities and energy-related businesses will be the main focus of the MTF. Classroom and on-the-job training in foundational skills such as mechanics, technology, tools and jobsite safety will be offered, as well as advanced training and certifications that open up multiple career pathways for trainees into a wide range of energy and construction jobs.

The target audiences for this training are unemployed and under-employed adults, geographic areas with high unemployment, people of color, women and returning military veterans. Flexible training will also be available to current energy industry companies and employees who are seeking to upgrade or broaden their skills and enhance their careers.

MTF is building strong partnerships with an integrated network of existing workforce agencies to provide adult basic education, bridge programming, life skills training, career coaching, and placement and retention support. MTF will be closely integrated with other training programs in construction, trades and engineering fields that offer focused or specialized training that leads to apprenticeships and licensure.

The MTF will also be a strategic partner for greater career awareness among high school students about the opportunities in energy, construction and engineering fields. These efforts will be necessary to create the workforce needed to attract and expand new businesses to Minnesota in the rapidly growing clean energy, energy efficiency and energy management fields.

There will be a particular emphasis at the MTF on building the capacity to offer training currently at campuses of the Minnesota State College and University (MnSCU) system throughout the state. The goal of the MTF is to use advanced “distance learning” technology and models to offer the entire range of workforce training programs at MnSCU institutions as a “virtual” satellite campus of MnSCU.

Minnesota employers will help the MTF define the skill sets needed for successful job candidates and training will be customized to meet these requirements.

The goals for the North Minneapolis MTF are:

  • Train 300-500 high-quality candidates every year, over seven years, for jobs with energy utilities, energy-related businesses and related businesses;

  • Provide ongoing skills development and certifications for participants to move forward along career pathways from jobs at $12-14 an hour to careers at $50,000-60,000 a year or more;

  • Expand workforce diversity in construction trades, utility and energy industries for women and people of color to more closely match the communities these businesses serve;

  • Raise the levels of energy career awareness and post-secondary training options that are based in STEM curricula programs among young people, particularly young people of color;

  • Meet the needs for highly-skilled workers in current utility and energy businesses as well as new clean energy and energy technology start-ups;
  • Increase family incomes and have a measurable impact on opportunity, education and skills gaps for minority households in Minnesota;

Energy Efficiency

Lowering energy consumption is one of the most effective ways to reduce our carbon footprint and is a critical component to your renewable energy strategy. REP can complete a comprehensive analysis of your building to identify opportunities to minimize energy consumption through a detailed building survey and energy audit. Let REP develop a comprehensive energy strategy for you through balancing energy use, indoor environment, and renewable energy generation.

Climate Change.png

Climate Change

The scientific evidence is clear, our climate is changing and the human contribution of greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere is accelerating that change exponentially. Don't just talk about it, take action. REP is founded on the premise that it is imperative that we reverse the trend of increasing greenhouse gas emissions. The only way we can accomplish this goal is to dramatically increase renewable energy output.

REP has a comprehensive plan to train the workforce of the future and begin the wholesale shift of energy generation from fossil fuel to solar energy. Join us in this movement.
